Chris Boardman used the ‘superman’position during his successful hour record attempt. This position has the effect of lowering surface area, and probably the coefficient of drag as well, by allowing riders to shrug their shoulders and place their head and torso somewhat in the wake (or draft position) behind the hands and arms. In late 1996,the UCI enacted bicycle restrictions to prevent cyclists from riding in the ‘superman’position. Specifically, the furthest forward position of the handlebars was limited to 80 cm forward of the bottom bracket spindle.

Patterns of stretch and subsequent shortening are noticed at each seat height presented in Fig. 6. While seat height affected the absolute length changes in the hamstring group, more than the gastrocnemius, the 108% seat-height condition was noticeably different from the other two seat-height conditions for the gastrocnemius. In general, the gastrocnemius stretches for the first 90" of the pedalling cycle, reaching a peak somewhere in the middle of the second quadrant. The time of peak stretch on the gastrocnemius was related to seat height, as was the rate of shortening.

Therefore, in the first 6-8 s, work output can be attributed to the anaerobic alactacid mechanism, and from 10 to 20 s, to the full activation of the anaerobic lactacid mechanism. The average power generated between 10 and 20 s in an all-out 20 s test is therefore indicative of the anaerobic lactacid mechanism of the subject. In elite cyclists, it ranges from 650 to 950 W, with the highest values being found in sprinters. Subjects having great anaerobic lactacid power can reach lactate concentrations that are much higher than those of more aerobic subjects.
