Bishop What to See & Do Bishop is near the northern end of the Owens Valley, about 15 miles from Big Pine. This community of 3,700 people is located between the state’s two highest mountain ranges. It is the center of a large recreational and resort area. Bishop Creek Canyon is west of the town on Bishop Creek Highway (State Route 168) and within Inyo National Forest.

In all but one instance these fishing spots are in remote areas. Big Pine Lakes include eight Lakes. Lake Eight has golden trout while the others have brook, brown and rainbow trout; Black Lake has brook trout; Cottonwood’s 13 lakes have golden trout in lakes One through Five. The others are open from July to October 5 for trout fishing, but with a five fish catch limit, and you can only use barbless, artificial lures. Diaz Lake can be reached by car. It is three miles south of Lone Pine on 395.

The John Muir Trail, extending from the summit of Mt. Whitney to Yosemite National Park, is the best-known backcountry trail. What to See & Do Lone Pine is the closest community to Mt. Whitney. To reach the mountain, take the Whitney Portal Road west for about 10 miles, and you’ll be within 11 miles of the summit. A trail takes you to the top at 14,494 feet – the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Alabama Hills, a few miles northwest of Lone Pine, is noted for the films that have been made there.
